Hockey Memorabilia extra...

This was a display at the IIHF World Fest in Saskatoon during the World Junior Championship. An older fellow setup a huge display of hockey memorabilia for everyone to look at. There were skates from the 1800's jerseys from 1908, pretty neat stuff. I posted some pictures of the items I really liked. Enjoy!

1990-1991 Team Canada World Junior Gold Medal Team 2X

This all began yesterday when I was reading a local online news article about the World Juniors. They said that the 1990-1991 Team would be at World Fest at 4:30 on New Years Eve. We planned on going in to watch the game there so this was just an excuse to get there early. Now, you have to understand, when I say the 1990-1991 Gold Medal Team, that's just the western Canada players, no one from eastern Canada showed, ie Lindros, Ricci, Potvin. As per Hockey Canada they were an hour and a half late from the program starting. We were there for the long haul so no matter to us but HC has been doing this all week. They introduced the players, NHL experience and any World Junior tidbits they could add. The players appeared to be excited to be with the guys again and most are from around here and they were shuttled off to the CAN/US game across the street after. They had an autograph session with posters for fans to get signed. I have cards of most of the guys but hey, you know me, I had jerseys and pucks galore. And yes, I did get that look from players. Most of the jerseys I had lying around so more so than anything, just putting them to good use. I played against Pat Falloon so I chatted with him for a bit about the old days. I had the Islander puck for Sillinger but did not want to come off greedy so when I went up again, I asked him if he could personalize it to my wife, avoiding the obvious assumption. They were scurried off and we watched the CAN/US game with 2000 of our best friends. Na, there were too many people for my liking. Friends who went to the game, came over to bring in the New Year with us. The 50/50 was $200,000 last night too, I have been to Flames games with 25,000 people and it was only $60,000. I am not a drinker so the alarm went off early today, bringing more tired eyes than anything else. We headed down to the brunch with the same players in -40 weather, rushed inside and had a nice meal with some new friends. Some players were a little late for the brunch, must have had a little too much fun I guess. There was a small program and then an autograph session again. I had only two logo pucks left, plus 4 blank pucks so I thought I'd get them filled. Hey at $75 a plate, I was walking out with some autographs. I chatted with Falloon again, got a picture with him. We laughed about something 'back in the day'. Most of the players were walking around so I managed to score some pics with Sillinger again, Needham and Chyzowski. I got my pucks signed and asked Sillinger about some of the games in Regina. He said he was not really worried about the Canada games, only 1 Oiler (Eberle) but Finland had 3 players drafted so he watched them pretty close. Dykhuis was bugging Sillinger about him being traded so many times. He said "She had a 1 in 9 chance to get one of your teams Mike!" The odds were not correct but funny anyway. I got to Kidd and kept a full puck for him, said I was a die hard Flames fan and got a picture with him. Cool guy...

Oh, Now This is Getting Fun!

I actually had a dentist appt today to find out I need a root canal this Monday. Ouch, but I will make the most of the day then. Day 3 New York Islander Camp. I was able to see the first group out at 8:00 am, appears to be the rookies going to Prince Albert to play an exhibition game against a local University team. Wasn't too interested to be honest so off to the dentist I went at 9:30. When I got back I met a new hounding buddy who was after some of the alumni. He said Trottier, Nystrom and Gillies were around but left. We noticed Rich Pilon standing by one of the gates, he is a local fellow who came back to Saskatoon where he grew up. I got him as the first on my Islander jersey. Chatted for a bit and off we went to look for more. I did have a chuckle though, he mentioned he was after Roloson and Weight, I didn't say anything for a few minutes, then I said we should go for a small hike. On the way I said who I had got on Sunday and said this was where. More of the early guys parked down in the tunnel, you could get at them but about 50 feet away. We waited for about 20 minutes and out came some of the younger guys, ah if I can not name them, maybe not. Butch Goring walked up the ramp and I approached him, I asked politely and he said, Sure but only if you're not going to sell it." I said I never sell these things. He said then he would be happy to. I even showed my intention by asking if he could personalize it, showing that this is mine. He was happy to sign for me, I thanked him and off he went. Sure enough, 15 minutes later, Trottier, Gillies and Nystrom came out and walked to their van. Someone else was there, cool, Ken Morrow. We approached and asked Bryan first, he said sure and gave each jersey to each of the guys. I managed to ask Nystrom about Eric, I asked how he was and that I was a huge Flames fan and I can't wait until Saturday's game. He said Eric was good and he hoped he played on Saturday. Bryan also signed an old photo of himself and he laughed and said, "Just look at that young stud!" Well, that was Day 3 at the Islander camp. Camp photos will be up tomorrow.

Sheldon Brookbank-Colby Armstrong Signed Pucks IP

CBC Hockey Night in Canada had their 'Play On' street hockey tournament this past Saturday in Saskatoon. Hundreds of people, kids, men and women played on six 'rinks' all day. The media game had 3 NHL'ers along with radio, TV and newspaper guys. Colby Armstrong (Atlanta Thrashers), Sheldon Brookbank (Anaheim Ducks) and Riley Armstrong (did not get him to sign)of my mighty Calgary Flames participated in the 4 on 4 street hockey event. I have met Colby and Sheldon before so I knew who I was looking for in the crowd. I managed to track both guys down and asked Colby first. Colby is a great guy and really down to earth. We spoke for about 5 mins about hockey, the Thrashers organization and he talked about Atlanta as a hockey town. Sheldon was over by a sponsors tent and was really interesting to talk to. I asked similar questions about living in Anaheim vs New Jersey, and he spoke very highly of Anaheim. I got two Ducks pucks signed by Sheldon (1 is up for trade) and a Thrashers puck by Colby. I did not get Riley because I had nothing to get signed and I knew the name but had no idea which guy he was. Oh Well.....Street hockey game pics in my Sports Image Gallery.

Chris Kunitz and the Stanley Cup

After a wild night of hounding and the World Junior game last night, I talked my wife into a 2 hour trip to Regina to see Chris Kunitz and the Cup. We found City Hall easy and maybe 40 people were there. CBC News was there along with various media. I noticed one thing right away, last year when Mike Babcock had the Cup in Saskatoon, there appeared to be more people. Chris wanted a fundraiser toward patient care and treatment at the Allan Blair Cancer Centre. Awesome cause....
There was a short program with some 'I love Regina' gifts for Chris from Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco. This part was really cool, the Cup was put in a tent where someone from the city would take your picture with your camera, so my wife and I got the first one taken, and as I walked away, I kissed it. The lady laughed and said, "That should be your picture!" So I kissed it again and got the picture. We moved to the second tent where Chris was signing. For a $5 donation, you got a picture of Chris with Cup. I donated $20 for 2 pics and Chris signed them both along with two Penguin pucks. I asked for a picture with him and he said, "Sure." We were there by 8:00am for a 9:00am start, to be done and back at the car by 9:30am. Oh yah, a 2 hour drive to get there. But worth it. I will post the pucks here and in my puck blog in the morning.
